What Is Marketing Automation?

Marketing automation software lets you build pre-programmed email marketing sequences that don’t require manual intervention. Unlike standard email campaigns designed to make the most of a one-off message, marketing automation workflows are typically designed by using if/then branching elements that funnel contacts through a sequence based on how they interact with your marketing collateral. By using email opens, link clicks, web form submissions, abandoned e-commerce shopping carts, and a wide assortment of customer data, you can turn a simple user action into a multi-step interaction meant to guide customers from prospect status to purchase and back again.

Similar to standard email marketing software vendors, marketing automation software vendors have created workflow templates that help guide you through the automation process. This way, you don’t have to build new sequences from scratch. These templates usually start with a basic interaction, such as a “Welcome” or a “Thank you for making a purchase” message. Once a contact receives the initial email, he or she is guided through a sequence based on his or her actions. For example, if John receives a welcome message and he clicks a link to an offer, then that action automatically pulls him onto a distinct email marketing journey. Conversely, if Sally deletes her welcome message, then she may automatically be pulled off of the workflow to conserve your email output.

How complicated and how deep your campaigns run is determined by which vendor you choose. For example, Hubspot and Pardot both offer unlimited email and unlimited sequencing options. This means you can create a workflow with multiple branches for each stage of the sequence, and you can create an unlimited number of sequences (not that you would). Conversely, Zoho Campaigns is mostly designed for users who want to follow customary workflows that guide users on basic sequences. As a result, Zoho Campaigns doesn’t offer unlimited sequencing or branching. This tool is perfectly suitable for marketers who just want to make an offer after a welcome email or for marketers who want to wish people a happy birthday once a year.

Pricing and Plans

Marketing automation software is typically priced one of two ways: by the number of contacts in your database or by the number of emails you send each month. For example, the Standard Pardot plan costs $1,000 per month for email marketing, prospect tracking, lead nurturing and scoring, reporting, forms and landing pages, and standard Salesforce customer relationship management (CRM). This plan can be upgraded to two higher tiers, each of which offers additional features, plug-ins, and add-ons. However, all three Pardot plans give you capacity for 10,000 contacts.

Don’t be alarmed by Pardot’s price tag as it’s easily the most expensive tool we reviewed. Hubspot lets you store 10,000 contacts for $1,200 per month for its most Basic plan; $1,250 per month for its second-most feature-rich plan, and $2,400 for the Enterprise plan. If you don’t need that massive amount of contact storage, then you can start with 100 contacts for just $200 month.

On the lower end of the pricing spectrum, you’ll find products such as Infusionsoft, which costs $379 per month for five users; 10,000 contacts, and 50,000 emails per month. The Complete package also includes Infusionsoft’s four core feature sets (CRM, e-commerce, marketing automation, and sales automation) at no extra charge. SendinBlue and Zoho Campaigns both offer free plans for anyone who is unwilling to spend even a dime for marketing workflows. Both tools scale upward for added capacity and complexity, and each offers pay-as-you-go plans for companies just dipping their toes into email marketing and marketing automation.

Unique Features

In addition to an organic integration with Salesforce, Pardot offers one of the cleanest user interfaces (UIs) and one of the largest variety of pre-built templates on the market. But its best features are designed to improve your workflows once they’ve been created. For example, you can pre-test the process of an automated program to see how it reacts. This is essentially a fire drill automation campaign to ensure your complex branching doesn’t lead to a dead end or a duplicate email. Pardot also lets you schedule social media campaigns and post in real time to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter simultaneously. If you really want to manage your marketing program from within one solution, then Pardot also offers a search marketing tool that plugs into Bing, Google, and Yahoo. You can check search engine rankings, monthly volumes, and ranking difficulties as well as run competitor analysis and monitor your paid search campaigns. No other tool we reviewed offers search marketing functionality.

HubSpot heavily relies on list building to help you manage your workflows. The tool lets you shrink (or grow) your lists in the same way you would narrow down products on Amazon or eBay, a feature which is incredibly straightforward and fast. When you add a URL to a contact record, HubSpot will automatically pull in demographic information, such as the contact’s company location and number of employees. You can email a contact directly from the Contact Record, and you can make a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) call if you have turned on this paid feature of HubSpot Sales. This integration lets you log and save call information within each contact record so there is a transparent history of which marketers and sales professionals interacted with contacts. You can also schedule interactions with contacts. You won’t find these features on the other platforms we reviewed.

Infusionsoft is the only drag-and-drop tool we tested, which is a nifty feature for marketers who may wish to work on touchscreens or don’t have time to deal with lengthy drop-down menus. It also provides unique tag removal that automatically pulls contacts from campaigns if they perform a certain action. For example, if contacts don’t open three emails in a row, then you can set the tool to remove all such contacts from the workflow. This way, you’re not sending messages into a vacuum. The tool also gives you the most useful real-time alert dashboard of any that we tested in this class. It lets you see every contact interaction with anyone in your database. So, if you sent an email to someone a week ago but they just opened it this second, then you’ll see their name pop up at the top of your dashboard. From this tab, you can send a follow-up email or adjust the contact’s standing within the specific workflow.

These are just some of the amazing features you’ll find when using marketing automation software. As a result, it’s important for you to determine your most needed features before making a purchase decision. None of the tools we tested are bad. In fact, each of them will provide you with more power than your standard email marketing platform will.

However, some are better than others, some are more expensive, and some do a better job letting you customize your workflows to suit your specific needs. Porsche launches a car subscription service

Porsche will start a “subscription service” for customers that could give them access to a number of their sports cars and SUVs, from $2,000 per month.

Porsche Passport will start in November in Atlanta, the German company’s North American affiliate announced Tuesday. The automaker calls it a “white-glove” service intended to give users app-driven access to a different Porsche on a flexible schedule.

The pilot program being rolled out in metro Atlanta first is made possible through Clutch Technologies, LLC, which is part of the company’s Strategy 2025 that wants to cater to, “customers’ desire to experience our sports cars,” Porsche Cars North America president and CEO Klaus Zellmer said in a news release. Expansion into other markets will be determined after feedback from Atlanta customers, a company spokesperson told The Verge on Tuesday.

A $2,000-per-month Porsche Passport membership would give customers access to models such as the 718 Boxster, the 718 Cayman S, and six other Porsche models; the more expensive $3,000-per-month plan gives a user the ability to drive one of 22 models, such as a Cayenne E-Hybrid.

A subscription to Porsche Passport covers vehicle tax and registration, insurance, maintenance, and detailing. There is a $500 activation fee at first and a credit check, but Apple iOS and Android users can then download the app and schedule same-day or future vehicle exchanges through the Porsche Passport app.

Porsche Passport now stands between fellow Volkswagen Group’s Audi on Demand service that currently operates in San Francisco as sort of a concierge rental service, as well as the subscription plan Care By Volvo. The Swedish automaker plans to debut that early next year with the new XC40 SUV, which will bundle insurance, maintenance, and washing into one flat fee with the car.

And for Porsche’s well-heeled customers, jumping into a different Porsche every day may seem like a perfect fit.

Bezel-less smartphones are arguably the biggest trend in the smartphone market right now, and Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, the successor to the smartphone that started it all, will launch in India today. The launch event is expected to kick off at 12pm IST, and as always, Gadgets 360 will have live updates from the event, and full details about Mi MIX 2 price in India, release date, and everything else. The smartphone has already been confirmed to be a Flipkart-exclusive, though it will obviously be available directly from Xiaomi as well.

To recall, the Mi MIX 2 was launched in China last month alongside the Xiaomi Mi Note 3. Notably, the Mi MIX 2 India launch will be the first premium smartphone the Chinese firm has brought to India since the Xiaomi Mi 5 back in March last year.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 was unveiled in three RAM and storage variants – 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage at CNY 3,299 (roughly Rs. 32,300), 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage at CNY 3,599 (roughly Rs. 35,300), and 6GB RAM/ 256GB storage at CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 39,200). The company had also unveiled the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 Special Edition 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage, and a full ceramic body, at CNY 4,699 (roughly Rs. 46,000). However, this last model is unlikely to be launched in India, at least on Tuesday – as it has yet to go on sale in China, where it will be made available to buy in November. Price in India of Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is likely to be similar to what we saw in China.

As for the features, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2’s biggest highlight is, of course, its bezel-less display. It sports a 5.99-inch full-HD (1080×2160 pixels, 18:9 aspect ratio) LCD display with a pixel density of 403ppi and support for DCI-P3 colour gamut. There is no ‘upper lip’ above the display, and the front camera has been relegated to the ‘bottom lip’, a design decision that Xiaomi had used with the last Mi MIX as well. The smartphone is lighter, smaller, and thinner than its predecessor. Featuring a ceramic body, the smartphone has a frame built out of 7-Series aluminium apart from an 18K gold plated camera ring. Another major highlight is ‘hidden sound-guided speaker’ that resonates sound through the display and frame, completely hiding the speaker itself. Finally, the company is also touting facial recognition technology for unlocking the smartphone.

Apart from the display, which we have already detailed, the regular edition of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 specifications include dual-SIM support (Nano-SIM), a Snapdragon 660 SoC, 6GB of LPDDR4x RAM, dual rear camera setup (two 12-megapixel sensors, one with an f/1.8 wide-angle lens and the other with an f/2.6 telephoto lens, offering 4-axis OIS), a 16-megapixel front camera with 2-micron pixels, up to 128GB of inbuilt storage that isn’t expandable via microSD card, and a 3500mAh battery. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11c, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, and USB Type-C. Sensors on board include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, an infrared sensor, and proximity sensor. It measures 152.6×73.95×7.6mm and weighs 163 grams.

Mark Zuckerberg put on an Oculus Rift this afternoon and used Facebook’s new virtual reality platform, Facebook Spaces, to transport himself to Puerto Rico, the Moon, and his house. He broadcast the moment live on Facebook in what turned out to be a rather strange demo of a social platform that doesn’t have a clear use yet. In particular, Zuckerberg’s choice of locations emphasized just how odd it’ll be to watch other people in any sort of serious situation in virtual reality.

Zuckerberg’s first stop, along with Facebook social VR chief Rachel Franklin, was to Puerto Rico, where he stood in front of a 360-degree video from NPR documenting the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Cartoon avatars make plenty of sense for the typical use of Facebook Spaces, which is mostly just meant as a digital hangout spot for early adopters of the Oculus Rift. But it clearly isn’t an ideal way to discuss hurricane relief efforts, particularly for a Silicon Valley billionaire doing his best to stay in touch Americans outside of the tech world. It made lines like, “It feels like we’re really here in Puerto Rico,” stand out for clearly being so far off from the actual experience, even though NPR’s reporting may well start to convey an idea of what it’s like.

After discussing Facebook’s contributions to Puerto Rico relief efforts, Zuckerberg and Franklin then transported themselves to the Moon and later to Zuckerberg’s living room, to see his dog. The stream also dropped out at one point and they had to start over again.

Facebook released Spaces in April after debuting the platform a year ago, at the Oculus Connect conference. His livestream today comes just days before the fourth annual Oculus Connect, which kicks off on Wednesday. A keynote is planned for 10AM PT that day, and today’s broadcast suggest that Facebook likely has some news in store for Spaces.
